Greek Orthodox Community of NSW endorses ‘YES’ vote for Voice referendum

·

The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales (GOCNSW) has issued a statement in support of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Full Statement:

The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales supports the “Yes” case for the inclusion in the Australian Constitution of an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Indigenous & Torres Strait Islander people continue to be the most disadvantaged group in Australia. Mortality rates, education rates, health indicators and incomes for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders are well below those of the remainder of the population.

Governments have attempted to correct the imbalance and provide services in health, education, and employment and although many billions of dollars have been spent there has been little and in some cases no improvement in the overall welfare of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Greek Community believes that by supporting the “Yes” Vote and enshrining the voice to Parliament in the Australian Constitution, Indigenous & Torres Strait Islander people will have the recognition they deserve as the First Nations People and have an opportunity to propose programmes and initiatives which benefit all Australians.

Overseas experience has shown that programmes and initiatives proposed by First Nations people have been more successful in resolving some of these issues The Voice to Parliament is an advisory body to the Parliament and to the Executive Government.

The Community therefore believes that the Indigenous Voice to Parliament should be supported with a “Yes” vote on the 14th of October, 2023.
