Greece’s Astypalea island turns green with new fleet of electric cars

·

In a groundbreaking project, Greece’s Astypalea island has said farewell to petrol and diesel vehicles and replaced them with electric cars.

Through a number of substantial grants, locals and local businesses are replacing their cars with electric vehicles, in addition to introducing innovative ridesharing ideas and on demand public transport schemes.

Originally proposed in 2021 by the Greek government and Volkswagen, the island has since received its first shipment of electric cars with the aim of making the island run completely on green energy.

A local resident Thanos Papagiannis who recently received his Volkswagen ID.3 replacing his gas-powered Golf 3, believes that E-mobility is a perfect match for the island considering the distances to travel are short and will inspire people to help with the world’s climate emergency.
