The Greek gods are the “new” meme trend

·

The new ‘meme’ trend flooding popular social media platform ‘Reddit’ is in fact, not very new at all. The Greek gods and Ancient Greek mythology have been reinvented into the meme world, as younger generations are appreciating Greek history and culture in new and inventive ways.

Memes are educating the youth on Zeus’ wandering eye, for example.

They are giving insight into the tense relationships between the gods that have been noted throughout mythology.

Memes are adapting the rich tales of mythology into entertaining, modern and simplified ways.

Dionysus, the Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity, madness and wild frenzy, is a particular favourite in the internet world.

‘Greek God memes’ seemingly flooded Reddit overnight, which led to lengthy conversations between users on the site, about their origins. It was most popularly suggested that the Greek God meme influx started over rumours that popular series, Percy Jackson, was getting a reboot on Disney+. Percy Jackson is a series of novels, films and theatre productions that are influenced by modern adaptation of Greek mythology.

The rich culture and history of the Greek Gods have withstood the test of time, and are clearly just as appreciated in today’s context as much as they were in ancient times.
