Stefanos Tsitsipas storms into Australian Open quarter finals after five-set thriller

Greek tennis player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, has stormed into the Australian Open quarter finals after defeating Italian Jannik Sinner in a thrilling five-set encounter on Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Sunday night.

With the enormous Greek community in Melbourne supporting his every move, the No.3 seed managed to survive his toughest test of the tournament against Sinner 6-4 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3 in a four-hour epic.

“It was a long match. I felt like I spent an entire century on this court playing tennis. What a great night,” Tsitsipas told reporters after the match.

A Roland Garros champion in 2021, Tsitsipas is the highest remaining seed in the Australian Open, but he was forced to survive a stirring fightback from Sinner.

Tsitsipas dominated for two sets before Sinner roared back into the match.

But the Greek captured the decisive break in the sixth game of the decider before sealing it in style with a cross-court forehand winner in front of 84-year-old Rod Laver, a three-time Australian Open champion.

“I had an unbelievable opponent on the opposite side of the court tonight, playing unbelievable tennis in the third and fourth sets,” Tsitsipas said.

“But I stayed really calm just like Mr Rod Laver used to do in his day.”

The three-times Australian Open semi-finalist will now meet unseeded 21-year-old Czech Jiri Lehecka for a place in the semi-finals.

Tsitsipas will become the world No.1 for the first time if he wins the Australian Open.

Kalambaka: trending travel destination in 2023

Kalambaka, a small Greek town in the heart of Greece, has been listed in the American newspaper, Stars and Stripes as one of the most trending travel destinations in 2023.

According to Stars and Stripes research on the travel press, Kalambaka earned a spot as a trendy destination because of its renowned beautiful monasteries and natural landscape.

“The area’s biggest draw by far, however, are the monasteries built atop the soaring rock formations,” Stars and Stripes said.

The paper is referring to the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, which is one of the six active monasteries in Greece.

The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron.

Built with stunning 16th century frescoes, ‘Megalo Meteoron’ means “suspended in the air” and was founded by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite in the 14th century.

Kalambaka was praised as being a geological wonder, and showing evidence of human existence dating back 130,000 years in their 1000 foot high rock caves.

The newspaper additionally commented on the town of Kalambaka, saying the dozens of bars, taverns and restaurants cater to large crowds of tourists – often with the delicacy of meat-based dishes.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is through to the fourth round in the Australian Open after defeating Dutch Tallon Griekspoor at Rod Laver Arena, in Melbourne today.

Tsitsipas will go to the last 16 of the Australian Open for the fourth time in his career, defeating Griekspoor 6-2 7-6(5) 6-3 win over in two hours and six minutes.

The Greek tennis player overcame adversity in the second set, when he had to save a set point, having not dropped a set in his three matches played, according to Eurosport. He got another break to serve out the set when the Dutchman sent an easy backhand into the net.

Former royal palace at Tatoi will become a museum by 2025

The former royal palace, Tatoi, located outside the city centre of Athens, will become a museum open to the public by 2025.

Greece’s minister of culture and sports, Lina Mendoni, made the announcement a day after former King Constantine II was buried at the once royal estate.

According to Ekathimerini, in an interview with private broadcaster Real FM radio, Mendoni said,  “Citizens will have access to the old palaces by 2025”.

“The complete restoration of the estate will not have been done, but some programs, such as the conversion of the palace into a museum, will have been done,” she said.

“The conversion of the stables of George I into a museum will have taken place. The infrastructure will all be done.”

The palace which faces Mount Parnitha, a dense forest mountain range, was ravaged two years by a wildlife fire.

It was left blackened and derelict up until the king’s death when cleanup groups worked for hours to restore the site that was once glamorous royal territory for his funeral.

Remembering the life of Greek American Actor, Telly Savalas

Aristotelis “Telly” Savalas was an American actor that is best remembered for his role as a New York City detective in the 1970’s TV series, Kojak, and James Bond archvillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

We are taking a look at his life and all his achievements.

Early Life:

Savalas was born on January 21, 1922, in Garden City, New York, the second of five children born to Greek parents Christina, an artist who was a native of Sparta, and Nick Savalas, a restaurant owner. His paternal grandparents came from the Greek village of Ierakas.

With his brother, Gus, sold newspapers and shined shoes to help support the family.

Military service:

In 1941, Savalas was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1941 to 1943 at Camp Pickett, Virginia.

In 1943, he was discharged from the Army with the rank of corporal after being severely injured in a car accident.

Career:

In 1959, Savalas attended an audition for the CBS anthology series Armstrong Circle Theatre, intending to prompt an actor friend who was up for a role.

Instead, the casting director took Savalas’ sinister demeanor into account and cast him in a character part, which led to other TV assignments and movie roles.

In 1973, he landed the part of tough-talking New York City detective Theo Kojak in the TV movie The Marcus-Nelson Murders.

The show catapulted Savalas into icon status as the very image of the hedonistic ’70s. This clout allowed him to hire brother George in the role of Detective Stavros.

To this day, Kojak’s catchphrase, “Who loves ya, baby?” can be heard around the globe. Savalas won an Emmy and two Golden Globes for his role on the series.

Death:

Savalas died on January 22, 1994, the day after his 72nd birthday, of complications of prostate and bladder cancer at the Sheraton-Universal Hotel in Universal City, California.

Greek developer secures finance of three more Australian solar projects

Mytilineos Holdings, a Greek industrial conglomerate company, has recently financially closed on three solar farms in Australia.

The Greek industrial and energy giant is investing in its second portfolio of projects in Australia with two solar farms in QLD and one in NSW.

“Australia is a key market for Mytilineos’ global renewables development strategy,” said Nikos Papapetrou, the company’s general manager of renewables and storage development.

“We are pleased with the trust given to the company and to our vision in the region and we look forward to many more successful financings for our future projects,” Papapetrou said.

According to Renew Economy, The Moura and Kingaroy solar farms in Queensland and Wyalong in NSW – 110MW, 53MW and 75MW respectively – are at varying phases of development.

The Moura farm, is complete and is undergoing hold-point testing, the Kingaroy farm is in its early stages of construction and Wyalong is partially built.

The Moura farm, in QLD’s Banana Shire.

The finance for the solar farm projects accrued to $234 million and was provided by Australian banks, ANZ and Westpac.

Mark Clover, ANZ executive director of corporate finance, said Mytilineos’ expansion in Australia is a positive sign for the local renewables market. He says, Mytilineos aligns with ANZ’s goal of spending $100 billion in sustainable solutions by 2030.

All solar farms are secured with power purchase agreements (PPA).

The Wyalong project has 10 year PPA with NBN Co to sell roughly half of its output. While the Moura farm has a PPA with state-owned utility CS Energy, and Kingaroy farm holds a PPA with Smartest Energy.
