Tsipras’ new party surges to second place in latest Greek poll

·

A newly published opinion poll has found that former Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ newly formed Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) has surged into second place, emerging as the leading opposition force against the governing New Democracy.

According to the RealPolls survey published by the Protagon.gr news website on Wednesday, New Democracy would remain the largest party with 28.3% support if a general election were held today. ELAS was projected to secure 21.4% of the vote, marking a gain of more than five percentage points since the previous poll conducted in May.

The survey also indicated growing support for the newly established Hope for Democracy movement led by railway safety activist Maria Karystianou, which was estimated to attract 11.9% of voters. Meanwhile, PASOK, currently Greece’s main opposition party, was forecast to receive 9.9%.

Several smaller parties were also shown to be on course to enter parliament by surpassing Greece’s 3% electoral threshold, including the Communist Party of Greece, Greek Solution, Voice of Reason and Course of Freedom.

In contrast, support for Tsipras’ former political vehicle, SYRIZA, appeared to have collapsed, with the poll placing it at just 1.2%.

The nationwide telephone survey was conducted between June 20 and June 22 among 1,537 respondents and carried a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
