Nicholas Stavropoulos appeals Greek rape verdict, remains on bail in Sydney

·

Sydney businessman Nicholas “Nic” Stavropoulos is on bail in Sydney after being convicted in Greece of raping a woman during a 2016 holiday on Mykonos.

The incident occurred during a luxury trip organised by families connected to Sydney’s elite Kambala Girls School, a scandal that has reportedly divided the close-knit eastern suburbs community.

The 50-year-old was sentenced to six years’ jail by a Naxos court in May but has appealed the verdict, with a full retrial expected.

NSW Police have applied for an apprehended violence order (AVO) to protect the victim, who has also filed a civil claim in Sydney for damages related to mental health and legal costs.

The former Excite Travel chief executive, whose company collapsed in 2020 owing $35 million, continues to deny the allegations.

The AVO matter will be mentioned at Downing Centre Local Court on this week.
