PRONIA launches new video on gambling harm and recovery

·

A new video is being released by PRONIA that sheds light on the depths of gambling-related harm through the stories of people who have recovered.

Individuals and community groups are invited to attend the formal video launch on Friday, May 13 at 3.30pm – 6.00 pm at PRONIA offices at 7 Union Street, Brunswick.

The ‘Gambling Harm – Stories of Recovery’ video was produced in English with Greek subtitles. The aim of the video is to reduce gambling harm in our community.

The video highlights people with lived experience of gambling harm sharing their inspiring stories of hope and recovery. It is a snapshot of shared experiences and personal stories of financial devastation, heartbreak, support, reinvention and recovery. Also, it is a crucial reminder that gambling harm can extend to family, friends, colleagues and employers.

PRONIA provides information sessions, referrals and support to individuals and families impacted by gambling harm.

In 2017-2018, Victorians lost a total of $5.81 billion on gambling. Of this, $2.69 billion was lost on pokies. According to Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation research, about 550,000 Victorians experience some form of harm from their gambling each year. For every person who is harmed by their own gambling, up to six other people are negatively affected, particularly friends and family members.

“Gambling harm is a big concern in our community. Help to overcome gambling is available, effective and attainable,” Mary Sophou, PRONIA’s Manager of Family and Community Services, said.

“By showcasing the stories of people with a lived experience of gambling harm we aim to help reduce the stigma associated with gambling, and to reassure individuals, families and communities that there is hope for recovery.

“The film is short but the message is very powerful. Everyone’s journey is different but what all the stories have in common is the courage, strength, perseverance and the success of the recovery journey.”

The film launch includes introduction from guest speaker and Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation Board Chair, Tass Mousaferiadis.

This is a community free event and open to the public. To reserve your seat, please call PRONIA at (03)9388 9998.
