Thanasi Kokkinakis breaks eight-year losing streak at French Open

·

Australian wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis upset British world No.25 Dan Evans on Sunday to reach the second round of the French Open for the first time since 2015.

Kokkinakis broke his eight-year losing streak with a win against Evans in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on court 7.

“He’s quality player. It was always going to be scrappy. To get it done in straight sets is massive. I’m just very happy with that win,” Kokkinakis said after his win.

The world No.108 first reached the third round at Roland Garos as a teenager in 2015 after defeating Bernard Tomic. He fell to Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 6-4 in his thus-far best grand-slam result.

Now, Kokkinakis will face either former champion Stan Wawrinka or veteran Spanish clay-courter Albert Ramos-Vinolas in round two.
