Thanasi Kokkinakis to play in Italian Open main draw for first time

·

Greek Australian tennis star, Thanasi Kokkinakis will play in his first-ever main draw of the 2023 Italian Open in Rome, Italy according to a report by Yardbarker.

The competition, which is an ATP 100 event, is held on a full-clay court and is one of the few times Kokkinakis elects to play on red dirt.

During his career, Kokkinakis has entered the main draw of an ATP 1000 event on clay three times before, but consistently lost in the first round. Now, he will have a chance to win on the red dirt.

It comes after a turbulent start to the clay-court part of his season, where Kokkinakis experienced losses in Madrid and Cagliari.

Kokkinakis will need to wait to see who will be his first-round opponent in his Rome debut.

It can be anyone from Alexander Bublik, Nicolas Jarry, his first-round opponent from Madrid Jaume Munar, or another qualifier.
