Flu death toll raises to 77 in Greece as seventeen people die in past week

With Greeks in panic after 3 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country, the seasonal flu continues to claim lives.

The number of flu deaths in Greece since last October has risen to 77, according to the National Health Organization (EODY), which on Thursday reported that 17 people had died from complications from the flu over the past week.

A total of 227 serious cases of the flu have been reported in Greece, 206 of whom have been treated in intensive care units. The flu virus is in “a period of heightened activity” in Greece, EODY said.

44 (66.7%) were tested positive in influenza type A, and 22 (33.3%) in type B.

30 (73.2%) were found to be infected with subtype A – H3NA – and and 11 (26.8%) with subtype A -H1N1 -.

227 serious cases have been recorded since October 2019. Of these, 206 were hospitalized in Intensive Care Units.

EODY recommends vaccination and compliance with personal hygiene measures as the best ways to protect one’s self from influenza.

The flu period in Greece typically ends mid-March.
