Greek restaurant named ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in UK Deliveroo awards

·

A Greek takeaway restaurant in Leeds, England, has been named ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in the annual Deliveroo Awards, held in the United Kingdom.

Named ‘The Athenian’, the restaurant serves the country’s best Souvlaki and Gyros, as well as modern twists on specialities such as feta and courgette fritters and halloumi fries.

Presenter Maya Jama announced the win during Deliveroo’s virtual awards ceremony, which was held on Twitter on Monday, December 7.

The Athenian also won the ‘Best Editions Restaurant’ award.

“We are so so proud and thankful for all our amazing Athenian staff who have made this possible in such a challenging year,” The Athenian said in a Facebook post following their win.

“Now to keep bringing you all that souvlaki that got us here in the first place..”

Speaking about the early stages of the pandemic in a promotional video for the restaurant, The Athenian said they have done everything necessary to be able to continue operating in these unpredictable times.

“We delivered 2,500 meals free to the NHS and implemented a 50% off scheme for key workers,” the restaurant said.

“We’ve managed to hand out pay rises to every member of our staff. We pay what we can, not what we have to.”
