Deakin’s Kon Mouzakis awarded honorary professorship in Greece

·

Deakin University’s Distinguished Professor Kon Mouzakis has been conferred an Honorary Professorship by the University of West Attica.

Professor Mouzakis received this prestigious distinction during a ceremony hosted by Australia’s Ambassador to Greece Alison Duncan at the Embassy in Athens.

In attendance was the Rector of the University of West Attica, Professor Panagiotis E. Kaldis; the Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Konstantinos Stergiou; and the Head of the Department of Industrial Design and Production and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Georgios Priniotakis who all attested to Professor Mouzakis’ outstanding achievements and contributions to science.

He was formally invested with the university’s academic gown in the presence of colleagues, family and friends, marking a milestone expected to foster even closer research and academic collaboration between Australia and Greece.

Professor Mouzakis arrived in Australia at two years old with his Greek migrant parents and has now built an internationally recognised career in science and technology.

As Professor of Software and Technology Innovation and Co-Director of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative (A2I2) at Deakin University, his work has focused on human-centred computing, data science and machine learning. His achievements include developing a world-first clinical decision support system for trauma care, now used at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital’s Trauma Center.

Alongside his success in Australia, Professor Mouzakis has maintained strong links with Greece, with his appointment at the University of West Attica further strengthening those ties.
