St George Saints men show fighting spirit despite tough Central Coast challenge

·

The St George Men’s basketball team may have come away without the result they were chasing, but they earned plenty of respect with a determined performance against one of the competition’s benchmark teams on the weekend.

Travelling to the Central Coast to take on second-placed Central Coast Waves was always going to be a difficult assignment. The challenge became even greater before tip-off, with St George forced to take the court without several key players due to injury and unavailability.

The biggest setback was the absence of starting point guard Loukas Traintis, whose injury left a significant hole in the team’s rotation. Traintis has been a key contributor throughout the season, providing leadership, ball control and scoring ability. His absence meant other players would need to step up against a Waves side boasting one of the strongest line-ups in the competition.

From the opening whistle, the match was played at a frenetic pace. Central Coast’s talented American import immediately stamped his authority on the contest, using his experience and athleticism to create scoring opportunities and keep the home side in control.

Despite facing an uphill battle, St George refused to back down. The visitors continued to compete hard on both ends of the floor and showed tremendous resilience against a team widely regarded as a championship contender.

The Waves built an early advantage, but St George continued to battle through every possession. Senior players Yianni Trikilis, Ross Aliferis and Riley Brown provided valuable leadership and composure, helping settle the team whenever momentum threatened to swing completely in favour of the home side.

At halftime, St George trailed 51-32, but there was still a belief within the group that they could challenge if they continued to execute their game plan and maintain their defensive intensity.

That determination was on full display during the second half.

Led by a remarkable offensive performance from Trikilis, St George gradually worked its way back into the contest. The visitors lifted their defensive pressure, controlled the boards more effectively and began converting their scoring opportunities.

As the game entered the final quarter, St George had reduced the deficit to just 12 points, creating genuine pressure on the highly fancied Waves outfit. For a period, the momentum had shifted and the visitors looked capable of producing one of the season’s biggest upsets.

However, with a shortened rotation and limited depth available, maintaining that intensity proved difficult. Central Coast responded with a strong finish, capitalising on fatigue and their deeper bench to regain control of the game.

St George Basketball

Despite St George’s spirited comeback, the Waves eventually secured a 97-74 victory.

While disappointed with the result, Head Coach George Aliferis was proud of the effort displayed by his players.

“I am obviously not happy with the loss, but the guys who played today gave it everything and left everything on the court,” Aliferis said.

“I can’t fault their effort or commitment. We were missing some important players and came up against a very good basketball team. Credit to Central Coast, they were better than us on the day.

“What pleased me was the character our players showed. We never stopped competing, we kept fighting and we gave ourselves a chance. That’s the standard of effort we expect every week.”

Aliferis said the focus now shifts quickly to another enormous challenge, with St George preparing to travel to face competition leaders Tamworth, who remain undefeated this season.

“We have another tough assignment ahead of us,” he said.

“Tamworth are sitting on top of the ladder and haven’t lost a game. We will recover, prepare well during the week and look forward to the challenge.”

The standout performer for St George was Yianni Trikilis, who produced one of the finest individual displays of the season. Trikilis poured in 43 points while also collecting eight rebounds, one assist and one steal in a tireless performance that kept his team in the contest throughout the afternoon.

Ross Aliferis also made a significant contribution, finishing with eight points, 11 rebounds and five assists while providing strong leadership and defensive presence.

Youth League men enjoy outstanding weekend

While the senior men’s team faced a difficult challenge on the road, there was plenty to celebrate for the club’s Youth League Men’s program.

The Youth League Men’s White team enjoyed a highly successful trip to the Central Coast, recording back-to-back victories in an impressive display of teamwork, discipline and determination.

Head Coach Paul Thanos praised the attitude and commitment of his players following the double success.

“I couldn’t be prouder of my players,” Thanos said.

“Our determination, resilience and preparation have come through in these performances. The group has worked extremely hard all season and it was rewarding to see that effort reflected in the results.

“The players trusted each other, followed the game plan and competed for every possession. They deserve a lot of credit for what they achieved this weekend.”

The strong results provide further evidence of the depth of talent developing throughout the St George basketball program and offer plenty of optimism for the future as the club continues its push towards the business end of the season.
