Archbishop Makarios of Australia receives Battle of Crete commemorative coin

The President of the Cretan Association of Sydney and New South Wales, Terry Saviolakis, met with His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia’s head office in Sydney on Tuesday, June 23.

During the meeting, Mr Saviolakis requested and received the Archbishop’s blessing and thanked him for his ongoing support of the Cretan Association, particularly in relation to recent commemorations marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

He also presented the Archbishop with a commemorative coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint, dedicated to the Battle of Crete in spring 1941.

Archbishop Makarios thanked Mr Saviolakis for the visit and acknowledged the work of the Cretan Association of Sydney and NSW.

He also offered his blessings and encouragement for the continued preservation of historical memory, Cretan tradition and the identity of Hellenism in Australia.
