Brisbane hosts dinner dance marking 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete

·

More than 250 guests gathered at Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane on Saturday, May 9, for a Dinner Dance commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

Organised by the Cretan Association of Queensland, the event was attended by His Grace Bishop Bartholomew of Brisbane and featured musical performances from visiting artists from Greece including Manolis Kontaros, Stelios Papadakis, Michalis Georvasakis and Kyriakos Kontekas.

During his address, Bishop Bartholomew conveyed the blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, and noted the significance of the date, which marked the anniversary of the Archbishop’s election as Archbishop of Australia and All Oceania.

His Grace said Greeks in Australia should feel proud of the Archbishop’s achievements, particularly the Cretan community, as he was “born, raised and ordained on the blessed island of Crete.”

He also praised Cretan Association of Queensland president Antonios Katsanevas for his “leadership, dedication and commitment” in promoting Hellenism and Greek values across Queensland.

Katsanevas thanked Bishop Bartholomew for his attendance and for his “love, care and dedication to the Holy Diocese of Brisbane.”
