The Ladies Auxiliary of the Cyprus Community of South Australia, led by President Thekla Petrou, marked International Women’s Day with a celebratory afternoon tea held on Sunday, April 19, at the Cyprus Cultural Centre.
The event brought together more than 160 attendees from across the community, featuring guest speaker the Honourable Andrea Michaels, former SA Minister for Arts and Small and Family Business, who delivered an inspiring address.
Among those present were Cyprus Community President Christos Ioannou, Councillor Quin Tran of the Woodville Ward in the City of Charles Sturt and President of the Vietnamese Community in South Australia, multicultural advocate Adriana Christopoulos, and medical professionals including Dr Galanopoulos, Dr Jim Costi and Dr Pouras.
Entertainment included performances from a young Greek singer who performed traditional songs dedicated to women, as well as singing by Vietnamese community members. Guests also viewed a short video presentation on the history of Cyprus.
Attendees enjoyed a selection of Greek sweets and savouries prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary Committee.
Ms Petrou said in her address: “Let us use today not only to celebrate the achievements of women, but also to renew our commitment to equality, respect and empowerment for all. Because when women rise, communities grow stronger, societies become fairer and the world becomes a better place for everyone.”
She extended thanks to all guests and supporters, including Mr Ioannou, Ms Michaels, Councillor Tran, Ms Christopoulos and the Vietnamese community representatives, and paid special tribute to her committee for their work in delivering the event.
