Ancient Greek art inspires standout Met Gala 2026 looks

·

Ancient Greek art and mythology took centre stage at the Met Gala 2026, with Kendall Jenner and Anne Hathaway showcasing designs rooted in Hellenistic influence.

Jenner arrived in a sculptural gown by Zac Posen inspired by the Winged Victory of Samothrace, also known as Nike of Samothrace.

The piece, housed at the Louvre Museum, depicts the Greek goddess of victory.

The custom design featured flowing drapery, pleated metallic fabric and an asymmetrical silhouette echoing the movement of the original statue.

Layers of silver silk chiffon and crystal embellishments referenced the sculpture’s windswept form and its connection to the island of Samothrace.

Fashion observers described Jenner as a “modern Greek goddess,” praising the look as a fusion of mythology, art history and couture.

Meanwhile, Hathaway wore a hand-painted gown by Michael Kors inspired by ancient Greek pottery, mythology and John Keats’ poem Ode on a Grecian Urn.

Created with artist Peter McGough, the design featured imagery drawn from Grecian urns, including doves, floral motifs and a figure symbolising the Greek goddess of peace.

Kors said the concept was shaped by the poem’s exploration of beauty, truth and immortality, aiming to create a timeless piece rather than a purely theatrical look.

McGough described the gown as “moving art,” with Hathaway acting as the canvas.

Both ensembles were widely praised for translating classical Greek themes into modern fashion, with critics noting their balance of historical reference and contemporary design.
