Three charged over alleged machete attack outside Vanilla Lounge in Oakleigh

·

Three teenagers have been charged following an alleged machete attack that unfolded in front of diners outside Vanilla Lounge in Melbourne’s south-east.

Police allege a group of masked offenders approached patrons at Eaton Mall in Oakleigh about 7.45pm on Friday, with some reportedly carrying machetes.

An 18-year-old man from Malvern East was allegedly stabbed during the incident and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 16-year-old boy was also assaulted but was not physically injured.

Investigators later executed search warrants at three homes, leading to the arrest of a 14-year-old boy and two 17-year-old boys.

The trio have been charged with multiple offences, including intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, recklessly causing serious injury, assault with a weapon and violent disorder.

Police allege the offenders fled the scene on foot following the attack. CCTV footage reportedly captured parts of the incident, which caused panic among nearby diners, with some fleeing restaurants or taking cover under tables.

The three teenagers are expected to appear before a children’s court, where police will seek to have them remanded in custody.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, with further arrests anticipated.
