‘Untamed Voices’ sells out, delivering a powerful tribute to rebetiko and female expression

·

The 44th Greek Festival of Sydney proudly presented Untamed Voices on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the iconic Factory Theatre, with the performance officially selling out and captivating audiences in a night of music, storytelling and cultural depth.

A standout event of the program, Untamed Voices brought together a compelling blend of beloved rebetiko classics and lesser-known gems, offering audiences a rich and authentic musical journey through one of Greece’s most influential traditions.

Led by acclaimed artist Elsa Mouratidou, alongside the exceptional Taxim Trio under the direction of Con Kalamaras, the performance was met with resounding praise. Mouratidou’s charismatic stage presence and commanding vocals captivated the audience, while her thoughtful narration provided insight into the history behind the lyrics and highlighted the critical role of women in shaping rebetiko music.

The evening paid tribute to legendary female voices including Marika Papagika, Rita Abatzi, Angela Papazoglou, Marika Ninou, Ioanna Georgakopoulou, Mary Linda and Sotiria Bellou; artists whose fearless expression defined generations of rebetiko. Through a seamless interplay of music and storytelling, Untamed Voices illuminated themes of resilience, defiance and identity, resonating deeply with contemporary audiences.

Greek Festival of Sydney President Sue Thliveris praised the success of the event.

“The overwhelming response to Untamed Voices reflects the enduring power of rebetiko and the importance of celebrating the women who shaped this extraordinary musical tradition. It was a truly unforgettable evening that connected audiences with both history and emotion,” Ms Thliveris said.

Set within the intimate atmosphere of the Factory Theatre, the sold-out performance reinforced the festival’s commitment to delivering high-quality, culturally significant programming that celebrates Greek heritage while engaging modern audiences.

Blending tradition, artistry and powerful storytelling, Untamed Voices stands as a defining highlight of the 44th Greek Festival of Sydney – a night where music, history and female expression came together in unforgettable harmony.
