Tsiknopempti, or “Meat Thursday,” has once again marked the start of Apokries season, with Thessaloniki and Athens hosting vibrant open-air celebrations centred on food, music and tradition.
In Thessaloniki, neighbourhoods including Ladadika and Ano Poli filled from early morning as residents set up street grills for the traditional tsiknisma.
Markets and butcher shops saw brisk trade, while masks, wigs and colourful costumes brought a festive air to the city. As night fell, outdoor parties and dancing continued late into the evening.
Athens also drew large crowds to the city centre for festivities organised by the Municipality of Athens and OPANDA.
A ceremonial procession began in Syntagma Square, led by the Cultural Society of Orchestral Art “Vákchai”, before concluding in Kotzia Square with a revival of the “Kordelatoi” Carnival custom from Naxos — featuring dancers in traditional foustanela adorned with ribbons.
Celebrations continued at the historic Varvakios Market, where live music accompanied communal grilling. With favourable weather boosting turnout, both cities embraced the lively spirit of Apokries’ official beginning.
