Apostolos Stamatelopoulos joins Sydney FC on loan in World Cup push

·

Sydney FC has strengthened its attack with the loan signing of striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos from Scottish Premiership club Motherwell until the end of the A-League season.

The 26-year-old, a former Newcastle Jets, Western United and Adelaide United forward, said the move would give him the best chance of earning selection for this year’s FIFA World Cup by securing more game time.

“I’m extremely excited to join Sydney FC — the biggest club in the A-League with a winning culture and high expectations,” Stamatelopoulos said, adding he was aiming to “contribute goals and help the team push for the A-League title.”

Stamatelopoulos has scored 12 goals in 45 appearances for Motherwell, including twice against Celtic, after a 17-goal A-League season with Newcastle earned him a three-year deal in Scotland. He has one Socceroos cap, from a June 2024 win over Palestine.

Sydney coach Ufuk Talay said the striker added “real quality and competition” to the club’s attack.

Stamatelopoulos is expected to arrive on Wednesday and could feature against Adelaide United on Saturday.
