Cumberland councillor Steve Christou to seek state seat with Libertarians

Conservative Cumberland councillor Steve Christou has confirmed he will contest the next NSW state election as the Libertarians’ lead candidate for the Upper House.

Christou, who quit Labor in 2019 and later Our Local Community, joined the Libertarians in December last year.

In his announcement, Christou said: “I bring to the table a wealth of experience with a proven track record of over two decades of fighting for the rights of the Australian people.”

He criticised what he described as “gutless and weak politicians” afraid to take positions on issues such as cost-of-living, net zero, Australia Day, the Voice to Parliament and gender ideology.

The councillor has denied accusations that he uses international issues to bolster his profile, after supporting condolence motions at council for communities affected by upheaval in Nepal.

Christou, who ran as a federal candidate for Parramatta in 2022, said he was one of the “most hardest working and well-known councillors” with a media profile surpassing many state and federal politicians.

If preselected on 13 December, he hopes to join John Ruddick as the second Libertarian in the NSW Legislative Council.
