Greece outclassed by Denmark in World Cup qualifier

·

Greece were left frustrated on home soil as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat against Denmark in Piraeus on Monday night, a result that leaves them trailing in World Cup qualifying Group C.

The hosts were second best in the opening half and fell behind in the 32nd minute when Mikkel Damsgaard dispossessed them on the edge of the box before curling in a stunning strike past Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Despite making two changes at the break and showing more attacking intent, Greece’s hopes faded when Andreas Christensen drove forward from defence to double Denmark’s lead with a powerful effort from distance.

Konstantinos Mavropanos came closest for the Greeks with a header in the 79th minute, but moments later Rasmus Højlund pounced to make it 3-0 after Patrick Dorgu’s shot struck the post.

After failing to manage a single shot on target in the first half and offering only glimpses of a threat after the restart, Greece will need to regroup quickly if they are to keep their qualifying campaign alive.
