Daniel Hasapis sentenced for drug-fuelled murder and assaults

·

A NSW Central Coast man, Daniel Paul Hasapis, has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for the brutal murder of his neighbour Sean Froggatt, and the assault of two women, while under the influence of ice.

The violence unfolded at Hasapis’ unit on 27 January 2023, during the Australia Day long weekend. After attacking Mariana Taitoko for hours – burning her with a lighter and knocking her unconscious – Hasapis bought drugs and later returned to assault his partner, Bonnie Cullen, over missing items.

When he learned that Mr Froggatt had visited, Hasapis invited him back and fatally beat him over 30 minutes, inflicting more than 70 injuries. During the same period, he also whipped both women with a chain.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Justice Natalie Adams described the assault as “severe, prolonged, involved gratuitous cruelty and was carried out against a defenceless man.”

A family member of Mr Froggatt told the court: “The cruelty and inhumanity of the assault inflicted by Mr Hasapis is impossible to forget or reconcile.”

Hasapis will be eligible for parole in 2041.
