Thessaloniki’s iconic Byzantine Walls are set to be illuminated under a major cultural initiative announced by the Greek Ministry of Culture, accrding to tovima.com. Spanning 4.5 kilometers, the historic fortifications will be the focus of a creative lighting project led by renowned Greek lighting designer Eleftheria Deko.
Sponsored by Metlen Group, the project was presented in Thessaloniki at a press conference attended by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, Mayor Stelios Angeloudis, and Metlen’s Vivian Bouzali.
Design work is expected to conclude by the end of 2025, with full implementation by late 2026.
“The Walls of Thessaloniki are among the most impressive fortification systems of the Byzantine Empire,” said Minister Mendoni. She noted that while roughly half of the original 8 kilometers remain, restoration efforts in recent years aim to reintegrate the walls into city life. “But this project would remain incomplete without proper lighting.”
The funding, secured through Metlen and its president Evangelos Mytilineos, ensures the vision will become reality.
Mayor Angeloudis underlined the symbolic importance of the project: “Lighting is culture, it is development, it is innovation—and above all, it is the future that reinforces what this city needs most: its collective self-confidence.”
With a blend of history, innovation, and public engagement, the lighting of Thessaloniki’s Byzantine Walls is poised to transform the monument into a vibrant landmark for locals and visitors alike.
