Sam Konstas set to miss most of BBL15 as Test recall looms

·

Teenage batting sensation Sam Konstas is expected to miss the majority of BBL15 as he firms for a return to Australia’s Test side for the upcoming West Indies tour.

Konstas, 19, made headlines last summer with the fastest half-century in Sydney Thunder history and a memorable Test debut at the MCG.

Although he missed selection for the Sri Lanka tour and World Test Championship final, he is tipped to open alongside Usman Khawaja in the Caribbean — and potentially in the home Ashes series.

If selected, Konstas could miss up to seven BBL games before rejoining the Thunder late in the tournament.

“We’re definitely planning for that,” Thunder GM Trent Copeland said. “I’d rather be pleasantly surprised than caught short.”

Despite his absence, the Thunder remain confident, with top-order options like Cameron Bancroft and potential international draftees including New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson still in the mix.

Konstas remains a key part of Australia’s long-term Test plans, viewed as the likely heir to Khawaja in the opening role.
