Alexander James Vadeikis faces potential new charge over fatal Gold Coast street race

·

Alexander James Vadeikis, 21, from Benowa, is expected to be charged as a party to the death of pedestrian Daimler “Kyle” Bermudo, who was fatally struck during an alleged street race on the Gold Coast in March 2024.

Police allege Vadeikis and another man, David Saji Mathew, 22, were unlawfully racing on Smith Street in Southport when Mathew, driving a Hyundai Veloster, hit and killed Bermudo, 21, who was crossing the road.

Vadeikis, a former captain of A.B. Paterson College’s Open A basketball team, had initially faced a lesser charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle.

According to The Gold Coast Bulletin, police now intend to upgrade this to the more serious offence of dangerous operation causing death while excessively speeding — an offence carrying up to 14 years in prison.

In court on June 12, police prosecutor Rodney Keyte attempted to lay the upgraded charge, but Vadeikis’ lawyer opposed the move.

As a result, the original charge was withdrawn, and Queensland Police are expected to formally pursue the new charge separately.

Mathew’s case is awaiting a District Court listing, and authorities intend for both men to face court as co-defendants.
