Kyrgios and Osaka join forces for US Open mixed doubles shake-up

·

Nick Kyrgios is set to return to the court at this year’s US Open in a high-profile mixed doubles pairing with Naomi Osaka, enticed by the tournament’s controversial new format.

After struggling with injuries and playing just nine matches since the start of 2023, Kyrgios will join the revamped short-form event, which features fast-paced scoring and a star-studded lineup.

He and Osaka, both ranked outside the top tiers, are expected to receive a wildcard entry.

The pair will join a field that includes headline teams such as Carlos Alcaraz with Emma Raducanu, Aryna Sabalenka with Grigor Dimitrov, and Novak Djokovic with Olga Danilovic.

Only two current top-10 male and female players have declined to enter.

“Seeing the teams that have already put their names on the entry list makes us all incredibly excited,” said US Tennis Association CEO Lew Sherr.

The new format—criticised by traditional doubles players—features shortened matches during Fan Week, with no-advantage scoring and match tiebreaks replacing third sets.

Australian doubles specialist Ellen Perez called the overhaul disrespectful, accusing organisers of sidelining established doubles athletes in favour of spectacle.

Despite the backlash, the tournament has already drawn 16 teams, with the top eight by combined singles ranking guaranteed spots and eight more gaining entry via wildcards.
