The Greek Festival of Sydney concluded in grand style on Sunday night with Τα Κινηματογραφικά: Songstresses of the Golden Age of Greek Cinema, a symphonic tribute to iconic Greek film music.
The event was held at the iconic Verbruggen Hall of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
The concert, conducted by George Ellis, celebrated beloved songs from the 1940s to the 1970s made famous by legends like Aliki Vougiouklaki and Melina Mercouri.
Backed by a full orchestra and traditional Greek ensemble, vocalist Dioni Vertzayas captivated the audience with moving interpretations of timeless classics.
The sold-out event marked a powerful close to this year’s Greek Festival, leaving audiences uplifted and inspired by this rare musical celebration of Greece’s cinematic heritage.
The Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Yannis Mallikourtis, also gave a speech in what marked his final appearance at the festival as his diplomatic posting to Australia comes to an end this month.
In his speech, the Consul General declared, “The Greek Festival of Sydney has the expertise, the know-how, and accumulated experience to promote Greek culture in Sydney.”
“I would particularly like to commend them for the fact that they don’t fall into the trap of promoting a stereotypical product… Greek culture is more than souvlaki… So I’d like to thank [them] for the support and what they do for the Greek community,” he added.
