Mitsotakis to be first Greek PM to visit Cyprus for invasion anniversary

Greece’s Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will attend the 1974 Turkish invasion anniversary commemorations in Nicosia, Cyprus on July 20, according to reports on Sunday.

According to Cyprus Mail, Mitsotakis is scheduled to visit Cyprus at the same time as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who will be in the occupied north on the same day.

Mitsotakis is set to travel to Cyprus following an invitation by the island nation’s President Nikos Christodoulides to join anti-occupation rallies on July 20.

He will become the first Greek Prime Minister to join anti-occupation rallies commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion.

In addition, Mitsotakis is scheduled to appear at an event on the evening of July 20, where Christodoulides will be the keynote speaker. Mitsotakis’ attendance will send a strong message in light of the occupation’s half-century milestone, as well as potential developments in the Cyprus situation before the anniversary.
