Missing Long Island candidate Petros Krommidas to remain on ballot despite disappearance

·

Petros Krommidas, a 29-year-old Democratic candidate for the Nassau County Legislature who went missing in April, will remain on the November ballot despite being presumed dead, a New York judge has ruled.

Krommidas, last seen swimming off the Long Beach boardwalk while training for a triathlon, disappeared on April 23. His clothes, cellphone, and car were later found nearby, and police said foul play was not suspected.

Extensive searches by authorities, friends, and family have yielded no results so far.

Democrats had sought to replace Krommidas in the District 4 race against Republican Patrick Mullaney, but the court ruled his name must stay on the ballot as he has not been legally declared dead.

“The Republican Party suing to keep a deceased person on the ballot so that they win an election is not democracy,” said Nassau Democratic Party counsel Keith Corbett.

If Krommidas wins, a special election will be held to fill the seat.
