Rental consultant Michael Christodoulou says young Australians are being pushed to “desperate” lengths to secure housing as competition for properties intensifies across Queensland.
Christodoulou, who launched a private service helping applicants strengthen rental applications, said many prospective tenants were struggling to present themselves effectively in an overheated market and needed to ensure applications were “properly completed” and submitted promptly.
He said rising rents were also placing pressure across all age groups, not just young renters, as demand continued to outstrip supply.
His comments come amid a surge in rental competition, with some properties reportedly attracting dozens of applications and prospective tenants increasingly adding cover letters, personal statements and financial incentives in attempts to stand out.
Industry figures say landlords are often prioritising tenants perceived as more stable, leaving many younger applicants at a disadvantage in an already tight market.
