Independent Multicultural Media Australia condemns Bondi Chanukah attack, calls for unity

·

Independent Multicultural Media Australia (IMMA) has issued a strong statement condemning the deadly terrorist attack at Bondi Beach during the Jewish festival of Chanukah, describing it as one of the darkest moments in Australia’s history and calling for unity, safety and respect across the nation.

In a statement released following the attack, IMMA said it stood “shoulder-to-shoulder” with Jewish media organisations and Jewish communities across Australia, extending its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed in the violence.

The organisation said the murder of 15 people on the first day of Chanukah had shocked the nation and plunged Australia into collective mourning, with images of the attack deeply distressing for communities and media workers alike.

IMMA also acknowledged the efforts of police, emergency services and first responders, as well as the courage shown by members of the public who intervened during the attack. The statement further expressed support for journalists and media professionals covering the tragedy, emphasising the importance of accurate, sensitive and responsible reporting.

Reaffirming its commitment to Australia’s multicultural values, IMMA said the nation’s social fabric is built on mutual respect, safety and shared civic responsibility. The organisation unequivocally condemned all forms of violence, hatred and vilification, and voiced deep concern about the rise of antisemitism in recent years.

“There is no place for hatred in our media, our public life, our institutions or our nation,” IMMA said, urging Australians to stand together against intolerance and to protect the principles of inclusion and respect that underpin the country’s multicultural society.
