In a meeting on Monday, January 29, Greece’s Defence Minister Nikos Dendias revealed that Greece is in discussion with the United States to co-produce US-designed Constellation-class frigates.

“We are discussing with the US the joint design and co-production of the new generation of Constellation frigates,” Mr Dendias said, following a meeting with Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas in Athens.

According to Ekathimerini, the Greek navy received a letter on January 16 by the US navy, to approve Greece’s interest in the co-production of the frigates.

This news comes after the US administration officially notified Congress about its plans to finalise an $8.6 billion deal to supply Greece with 20 Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter jets.

The US administration also disclosed a $23 billion transaction for the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey. This aims to navigate a delicate balance within the NATO alliance, to accommodate both Greece and Turkey.
