Defteros Lawyers sues ‘bike boy’ saga cyclist for alleged unpaid bill

·

Veteran lawyer George Defteros has commenced proceedings against cyclist Ryan Meuleman, with court documents alleging he owes more than $270,000 in unpaid legal fees.

In a statement of claim filed in the County Court on Wednesday, Defteros Lawyers alleged Meuleman failed to pay for services provided after retaining the firm in June 2023. The agreement was terminated in March 2024 before an outcome was reached.

According to The Australian, the claim seeks $160,000 in professional fees, a $40,000 uplift success fee, $27,000 in disbursements and $22,000 in GST, totalling $250,133.45, plus $18,324.97 in interest.

“The plaintiff provided valuable legal services to the defendant,” the filing states.

Mr Meuleman, now 28, was seriously injured in 2013 when he was struck by an SUV being driven by Catherine Andrews, with her husband and former Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews in the passenger seat.

He later pursued legal action against Slater & Gordon regarding the handling of his TAC compensation payout and reached a confidential settlement.

The proceedings launched by Defteros Lawyers are the latest development connected to what has become known as the “bike boy” saga, which has attracted significant public and media attention over the past decade.
