The Hellenic Sub-Branch of the RSL brought the community together for its “Mothers Day in June” social event on Sunday, June 14, welcoming more than 100 guests for an afternoon filled with celebration, recognition, friendship and Greek culture.
While the Hellenic RSL is best known for its military commemorative activities, including its annual World War II OXI Day observances, the June gathering offered members, families and supporters the chance to come together in a relaxed social setting and celebrate the strong community spirit that underpins the organisation.
A highlight of the afternoon was the recognition of two generations of grandmothers, with the oldest grandmother in attendance, Zoe Sitzoukis, and the youngest grandmother, Angela Karvelas, each presented with a bouquet of flowers to mark the occasion.
The event also acknowledged the dedication and contribution of several longstanding supporters of the Hellenic Sub-Branch.
Appreciation plaques were presented to Konstandina Sarikizis and Maria Kaltzidis in recognition of their service and commitment, while Francis Daly and Angelo Tsapsalis received certificates of appreciation for their generous support of the organisation.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, Melbourne entertainer Spiros Vitsentzatos and his bouzouki kept guests entertained throughout the afternoon, with many taking to the dance floor to enjoy traditional Greek music and celebrate alongside family and friends.
As the Greek saying goes: “Φάγαμε, ήπιαμε και χορέψαμε” — “We ate, we drank and we danced” — perfectly capturing the spirit of a memorable afternoon.
