Deadline extended for Greeks to get new ‘Personal Number’

·

The deadline for citizens to select the first two digits of their new Personal Number has been extended by two months, until November 5, the Greek government announced.

Applicants can choose their preferred prefix through the myInfo application on pa.gov.gr, at Citizens’ Service Centres (KEP), or via Greek Consular Authorities abroad. The third digit of the code is automatically generated as an alphabetical character.

The Personal Number (Προσωπικός Αριθμός – Π.Α.) was officially launched on June 3, 2025.

The 12-character alphanumeric code replaces multiple older identifiers such as the AFM (tax number) and AMKA (social security number), becoming the single point of identification for Greek citizens both in Greece and abroad.

Since June 29, the number has been mandatory for issuing new Greek ID cards, which all citizens, including members of the diaspora, will need to obtain.

For Greeks living overseas, including Australia, the number can be obtained online via myinfo.gov.gr using TaxisNet credentials, or in person at consulates, which began offering the service on June 23.

If citizens abroad do not apply themselves, the state will automatically assign them a number. Self-registered applicants retain the option to choose their prefix, while system-issued numbers will be assigned randomly.

The government has described the reform as a key step toward efficiency and digital transformation, aiming to simplify access to services ranging from taxation and pensions to healthcare and property matters; a development seen as especially beneficial for diaspora communities.
