St Basil’s NSW & ACT marks Greek Independence Day with visiting Greek MPs

·

St Basil’s NSW & ACT commemorated Greek Independence Day with a special celebration attended by members of a visiting cross-party parliamentary delegation from Greece, in an event highlighting heritage, faith and diaspora ties.

Among the distinguished guests were Maximos Charakopoulos, Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of New Democracy; Filippos Fortomas, Chair of the Hellenic Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee on Greeks Abroad; Stavros Michailidis from PASOK; and Konstantinos Barkas from SYRIZA.

The event was held with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and was hosted by Their Graces Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis and Bishop Athinagoras of Canberra, alongside Rev. Father Miltiades Chryssavgis and members of St Basil’s executive team and management.

The gathering brought together community leaders, clergy and representatives of the Greek Australian community to mark March 25, a date of enduring national and cultural significance for Hellenism.

Organisers described the occasion as a meaningful celebration of Greek heritage and identity, reflecting the strong and ongoing connection between Greece and its diaspora in Australia.
