Dimitris Basis and Newtown Performing Arts close chapter with ‘Final Encore’

·

World-renowned Greek vocalist Dimitris Basis has delivered a powerful farewell performance with students from Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, concluding an eight-year collaboration that has resonated deeply within Sydney’s Greek Australian community.

Staged across two nights on April 29 and 30 under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, “The Final Encore” marked the culmination of a partnership widely regarded as a cultural bridge between generations, blending professional artistry with youth performance and heritage preservation.

Beyond its musical achievements, the collaboration has played a significant role in strengthening cultural identity among young Greek Australians, while also introducing broader audiences to Greek music and history through large-scale, sold-out productions.

Community members, families and supporters have consistently turned out in strong numbers over the years, reflecting the project’s growing importance as a shared cultural experience.

Reflecting on the journey, Basis said: “Performing with the students of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts has been one of the greatest honours of my international career.

“Every time I return to Australia, I am moved by their passion and the way they embrace the ‘global language’ of Greek music. I have full confidence that this journey will not end here; it is my dream and my firm belief that these talented young artists will soon visit Greece to present their incredible artistic flair on our home soil.”

The final program carried strong cultural symbolism, guiding audiences through defining moments of Greek identity, from tributes to the defenders of Messolonghi through the poetry of Dionysios Solomos and music of Yannis Markopoulos, to iconic works by Vassilis Tsitsanis and Dimitris Mitropanos.

Rebetika influences from Markos Vamvakaris and international interpretations, including Edith Piaf and The Beatles performing works by Mikis Theodorakis, further reflected the program’s cross-cultural reach.

The initiative began in 2018 when music educator Emlyn Lewis-Jones brought Basis to the school after following his career for a decade. What followed, Byzantium to Zorba (2019), 200 Years: A Celebration of Greek Music (2021), Music from the Heart (2024), and now The Final Encore, evolved into a flagship cultural project for the diaspora.

For many within the community, the concerts became more than performances; they were moments of connection, education and pride, showcasing the enduring relevance of Greek music while nurturing the next generation of performers.

The final production also featured key contributors, including orchestrator George Doukas, vocal director Ynping Mak, and bouzouki virtuoso Themelis Samarkos, whose work helped bring authenticity and depth to the performances.

As the curtain falls on the collaboration, its broader legacy remains, not only in the music performed, but in the strengthened ties between artists, students and community.
