Australian Hellenic Choir to present tribute concert honouring Giorgos Zambetas

·

The Australian Hellenic Choir will present a special tribute concert dedicated to legendary Greek musician Giorgos Zambetas on Sunday, 31 May, celebrating the enduring legacy of one of Greece’s most beloved performers and composers.

The event will take place at the St George Motor Boat Club in Sans Souci from 11.30am to 4pm and will feature many of Zambetas’ most loved songs performed by the 30-member choir.

Last year marked the centenary of Zambetas’ birth, with his contribution to Greek laiko and rebetiko music continuing to resonate strongly with audiences around the world. Widely admired for both his songwriting and masterful bouzouki playing, Zambetas remains one of the defining figures of modern Greek music.

For the upcoming soirée, the choir’s repertoire has been specially arranged for four voices by third-generation Greek Australian maestro Leon Vitogiannis.

The performance will also mark a departure from previous productions, with several choristers taking on solo performances alongside the full choir. Accompaniment will include bouzouki, piano and guitar.

President John Saratsopoulos said the choir had worked hard to create a warm and memorable musical experience for audiences.

“It will be a warm, relaxed atmosphere at the Zambetas concert. The choir has put a lot of effort into this production so that we can showcase our best,” Saratsopoulos said.

The concert will also be the first led by Saratsopoulos alongside vice president Fotini Stavridis and the choir’s new committee.

“We hope that the music-loving public of Greek and other backgrounds will support us,” he added.

Guests attending the event will enjoy a three-course meal and drinks as part of the afternoon celebration.

The tribute concert will be held on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at the St George Motor Boat Club, 2 Wellington Street, Sans Souci, NSW.
