The Australian Hellenic Educators’ Association together with the NSW Department of Education are organising this year’s Conference on Modern Greek education in primary and secondary schools, titled New Ways, on Friday, May 26 at AHEPA NSW Hall in Rockdale.
The Conference will include presentations from educators and the presentation of the Phoevos Awards for excellence in Hellenic Studies at the primary level and the Ayios Kosmas o Aitolos Awards awarded to teachers for service to Hellenic education.
At a time when Hellenic language education is thriving at the primary level and in crisis at the secondary level, the New Ways Conference is an opportunity for all stakeholders to gather and to discuss the development of all aspects of Hellenic education in NSW and the ACT.
Amongst the presenters on the program are:
- Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Ioannis Mallikourtis;
- Dr Vasilis Adrahtas (Western Sydney University), ‘Why does Greek matter in Australia? Lessons from the Revitalisation of Indigenous Languages’;
- Dr Panayiotis Diamadis, ‘Hellenic language through Australian Hellenic history’; and
- Anna Skribias, ‘Greek language, culture, history – Komboloi’.
Hellenic language is the gateway to the ideas and work of leaders and thinkers which still have an impact on modern life. The great German philosopher Georg Hegel told the students of the high school he ran in Nuremberg in the early 1800s that: ‘The foundation of higher study must be and remain Greek literature in the first place, Roman in the second.’
Educators in NSW and the ACT are invited to explore New Ways to continue this service of Hellenism and of our students in the 21st century Australian context.
The Conference will be held on Friday, May 26 at AHEPA NSW Hall, 394-396 Princes’ Highway, Rockdale, NSW and is open to anyone with an interest in Hellenic Studies at the primary and secondary levels.
The 2023 Conference addresses a range of NESA Standards, as specified on the Registration Form. Registration is $65 per person. For more details, please contact the Association on austhelleniceducators@gmail.com
