Kytherian panel to be unveiled on Australia’s National Monument to Migration

·

To commemorate the centenary of the Kytherian Association of Australia (KAA), the association has worked with the Australian National Maritime Museum to honour migrants from Kythera on Australia’s National Monument to Migration.

The Monument currently features over 32,000 names from 138 countries including 1,938 from Greece – amongst these, the first ten Greek migrants to Australia.

Now, a dedicated bronze panel, supported by Frutex, Pallion and Poulos Bros Seafood, will be added to the monument in recognition of Kytherian migrants.

The Kytherian panel will be officially unveiled on Saturday, May 20 at 2pm at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

The first female President of the KAA, Barbara Zantiotis, will emcee the event. There will also be speeches by Frutex director, Panagioti Magiros, Peter Poulos from Poulos Bros Seafood, and 2023 finalist for the Kytherian Youth Scholarship, Kayla Cassimatis.

“It is our absolute duty to remember our brave Kytherian migrant relatives who left their families and homes for the great unknown of a new life in Australia,” Peter Poulos, from Poulos Bros Seafood, said.

“It was then a ‘one-way’ ticket for them and without their tears and sacrifice we would not be here today.”

Event Details:

  • Where: Australian National Maritime Museum (2 Murray St, Sydney, NSW, 2000).
  • When: Saturday, May 20 at 2pm.
