Famous shipwreck beach on Zakynthos to be closed this summer

The famous shipwreck is on Navagio beach, Zakynthos.

Zakynthos’ famous Navagio beach will be closed this summer due to significant risk of landslides caused by the erosion of surrounding cliffs.

The decision was recommended by the Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection Organisation (OASP) to Zakynthos authorities following a site visit on March 8, 2023.

Greece’s Tourism Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, said: “The safety of residents and visitors is above everything else.”

The beach is closed as large rocks from the surrounding cliffs could fall into the bay.

“The decision was takes into account the new scientific data of the OASP and its President, Professor Efthymios Lekkas, given the large number of visitors in the area during the tourist season,” Minister Kikilias added.

Since a 5.4 magnitude earthquake last September, Navagio beach has been closed and will remain as such until the next re-assessment.
