Oakleigh Grammar celebrates sport, culture and community

·

Oakleigh Grammar participated in the 2026 Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event (GOAANSE Games), held from 4–8 May in Sydney and hosted by St Euphemia College, Bankstown.

The event brought together Greek Orthodox schools from across Australia in celebration of sport, culture, faith and community.

The Games opened with a Doxology service at St Euphemia Greek Orthodox Church in Bankstown, uniting all participating schools in prayer and reflection, before competition commenced across the week. Throughout the week, students competed across soccer, basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal and table tennis.

A highlight of the program was the Performing Arts Festival, where students presented music, poetry and dance, including Oakleigh Grammar students proudly showcasing their talents and cultural identity by performing Greek dances.

Oakleigh Grammar delivered strong results across the sporting program, with the Girls Basketball Team finishing equal top on 5 wins and 1 loss, placing 3rd overall on percentage in a close finish. The Girls Volleyball Team placed 2nd overall with 5 wins and 1 loss. Other teams performed consistently throughout the week, showing strong teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship.

Beyond competition and performance, students engaged with peers from All Saints Grammar, St Andrew’s Grammar, St George College, St John’s College, St Spyridon College and St Euphemia College, strengthening friendships and connections across the national Greek Orthodox school network.

“The cultural emphasis of the event was very strong, with high quality Hellenic performances by all schools, and the final evening dinner and dance was a great celebration of Hellenism,” he said. “I am so very proud of all Oakleigh Grammar students for their enthusiasm and representation of our School.”

The GOAANSE Games provided students with the opportunity to represent Oakleigh Grammar with honour, strengthen teamwork and resilience, and deepen their connection to cultural heritage.

Oakleigh Grammar acknowledged St Euphemia College for hosting the 2026 event and thanked all participating schools for their sportsmanship, spirit and commitment throughout the Games.
