Moursellas sisters turn family food traditions into culinary success

Australian-Greek twins Helena and Vikki Moursellas have turned their lifelong passion for food into successful careers in publishing, recipe writing and food styling, more than a decade after first appearing on television cooking competition My Kitchen Rules.

According to indailysa.com.au, the South Australian sisters, rose to national attention after competing on the show in 2014. Since then, they have released three cookbooks, including their latest title OPA! Recipes Inspired by Greek Tavernas, and collaborated with brands including Robert Gordon.

The sisters say food played a central role throughout their childhood, particularly after the death of their father, Nick, when they were 12 years old. Supported closely by their grandparents, they found comfort in family meals and Greek traditions.

The pair described My Kitchen Rules as a turning point in their careers, though success did not come immediately. They revealed they applied to the program three times before being selected.

Today, the sisters focus on preserving Greek culture through traditional recipes and storytelling. Among their most nostalgic dishes are keftedes and pastitsio, meals closely tied to memories of family gatherings and their grandmother’s cooking.

Helena, who regularly travels to Greece, said the latest cookbook was inspired by regional tavernas and the people behind them, including a cook on the island of Amorgos known for her traditional chickpea dish.

While continuing to work together on future projects, Helena is also pursuing opportunities in London as an assistant food stylist, with hopes of one day opening her own taverna in Greece.
