Jordan Meads to repay his grandparents as Greece’s captain for the Rugby League World Cup

·

Jordan Meads is leading the Greek Rugby League team in the upcoming World Cup, and as it fast approaches the significance of this role is something that he holds very close to his heart.

The 30-year-old New Zealand native was born to a Kiwi father and Greek mother, who he says doesn’t really know too much about rugby but is so excited to see her son lead the team.

“She doesn’t know anything about rugby league but she knows a lot about Greece,” Meads says to Yahoo.news.

“She’s really excited and I’m sure there’ll be a helluva lot watching our opening game.”

Having lived with his mum and grandparents for the first five years of his life, he acknowledges the sacrifice his grandparents made by fleeing their homeland to go to New Zealand to give their family a better life.

“I’m indebted to what they’ve done and I’m really excited to repay in a small form in pulling the blue and white jersey on and doing our nation proud.” says Meads.

The seasoned half-back, who played for Newcastle Thunder for two English seasons in 2014–15, is optimistic that rugby league in Greece will reach new heights as a result of the 2018 World Cup.

The Greek team will get their World Cup campaign underway against France in Doncaster on Monday, October 17 being led by their coach Steve Georgallis.

“We are really excited that we’ve got two of the top four fancied teams in the whole competition in our group. We wouldn’t have it any other way,” Meads added.

“There’s no expectations from us but that’s just the way we like it.”
