US and German officials condemn Turkish questions over Greek sovereignty

·

Germany’s Ambassador to Greece, Ernst Reichel, has taken to Twitter overnight stating that “any questioning of Greece’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is unacceptable.”

This comes just two days after Devlet Bahceli, a junior coalition partner in Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government, was pictured holding a map depicting large Greek islands, including Crete, as Turkish.

Reichel retweeted an earlier post by Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis in which he queried whether the map was “a fever dream of extremists or Turkey’s official policy”, asking Erdogan to clarify the matter.

The US State Department has also weighed in on the issue, with a spokesperson stating: “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greece is not in question,” Ekathimerini reported.

“We continue to encourage our NATO allies, Greece and Turkey, to work together to maintain peace and security in the region and to resolve disputes in a diplomatic manner. We urge our allies to avoid rhetoric and actions that could further escalate tensions,” the spokesperson continued.
