Residents evacuated as wildfires rage across central Greece

A wildfire is burning across three fronts near the Greek town of Amfissa, in the municipality of Delphi, central Greece, the Fire Brigade said on Monday.

According to AMNA.gr, the fire is reportedly burning its way through olive groves towards the monastery of Profitis Ilias and also towards the coastal town of Itea.

The monastery has been evacuated and firefighters are trying to prevent the blaze from reaching a forested region nearby.

Delphi Mayor, Panagiotis Tagalis, told CNN.gr that for now the situation is ongoing.

“The problem has now moved to the semi-mountainous area of ​​northern Itea. The front, of course, is large and with low vegetation,” the Mayor added.

Residents in the northern part of Itea in the Fokis region have been successfully evacuated. The village of Sernikaki was also evacuated.

Some 50 firefighters with 15 fire engines and 3 ground teams are assisted by 5 water-dowsing aircraft and municipal water tanks, to fight the wildfires.

This comes as the Fire Service confirmed 52 forest fires broke out in Greece the 24-hour period to 6 pm on Monday. The threat of fires remains very high for Tuesday in many regions.
