Signature lead project ‘The Spheres’ to bring Greek flair to the Brisbane Festival

·

The Brisbane Festival has announced the first part of its 2022 program and there’s a definite Greek flair to its events this year.

Running over four festive weekends from September 2-24, the festival’s signature lead project is a work of sculpture, light and sound called The Spheres by Brisbane-born artist Lindy Lee.

Lee said The Spheres is inspired by the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician, Pythagoras, who “speculated that celestial bodies caused vibrations as they coursed majestically through the heavens.”

According to Limelight Magazine, this project will be exhibited during the festival on The Art Boat, an old working barge turned into a floating gallery on the Maiwar river.

The festival will also premiere Holding Achilles, a new work by Dead Puppet Society in collaboration with physical theatre makers Legs on the Wall.

Holding Achilles is a retelling of Greek tragedy, the “untold love story” between Achilles and Patroclus, combining human performers with puppet creatures.

Overall, there will be 20 world premieres at the festival, as well as more than half of the 500-odd performances offered free of charge.

The rest of the Brisbane Festival program will be announced on July 6.
