‘The guy is a rat’: George Kambosos Jr and Devin Haney face off ahead of June 5 fight

·

George Kambosos Jr and Davin Haney have come face-to-face for the first time today ahead of their boxing title match at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on June 5.

Kambosos arrived in Melbourne on Saturday night to loud chants from Greek fans at the airport, while Haney arrived in the city last week without his father and head trainer, Bill, due to visa issues.

At the first official event of fight week this morning, the tension was already high between Kambosos and Haney as the Greek Australian fighter labelled the American a ‘rat’ and ‘informant.’

Kambosos said Haney had sent him secret messages ahead of his Teofimo Lopez match last year, which saw Kambosos claiming the Unified World Lightweight title.

“This guy is a rat. Teofimo Lopez fight against a foreigner, he was messaging me. He was telling me all the details,” Kambosos said at the face-to-face press conference.

“Teo at the hookah lounge, Teo having problems with his wife. This is a rat. This is an informant.”

In response, Haney said Kambosos’ verbal jabs were just an act.

“When is the act gonna stop,” Haney said. “We can see right through it. Just be you, that’s all you gotta do. Be you. You’re acting.”

Kambosos replied, “I’d rather be an actor than a rat,” before he went on to insist that “on Sunday, I’m going to whip your ass.”
